Adoption Process

1. meet our adoptables

Peace for Pits is a volunteer-run, foster-based rescue in the Chicagoland area.  That means we do not have a physical facility. Because we are foster-based and our dogs live with real families all over Chicago, we will be able to give you a better idea of your future dog’s temperament and behavior!

To see our current adoptables, please click here to visit our Petfinder page!
We also host adoption events year round. Please click here to see our upcoming events!

2. Complete an adoption form

If you have found a dog that you are interested in – please fill out an application form by clicking here! Even if you aren’t ready to adopt just yet, please feel free to fill out a form so that we have your information on file. That way, when you find your soul pup, you will be ready to adopt!

3. Wait for a p4p team member to contact you

As we are a volunteer run rescue, processing time for applications can vary. Our aim is to process your application within a week. We will be reaching out to you and your references soon – don’t worry! If you haven’t heard back in a week, please follow-up with p4papplications@gmail.com!

4. Schedule a home visit

After your application has been reviewed and interviews completed, the next step is a home visit. This step is to help better understand what kind of environment our dogs will be living in their future home.

It doesn’t matter if you live in a tiny apartment or a large home with a fenced in yard! We just care that our adoptables get plenty of love, attention, and exercise in their future homes!

5. schedule A meet and greet

If you’ve already met the dog of your dreams at one of our adoption events, this step may not be needed – but for those who have only fallen in love with an adorable picture online, the next step is to schedule a private meet and greet. We will put you in contact with the dog’s foster parent, who will be able to tell you all about the dog’s personality and habits. You can then coordinate a time to meet the pup!

6. Foster to Adopt!

After successful meet and greets, the next step is Foster to Adopt. At Peace for Pits, we understand that owning a dog is a long term commitment and want to make sure the fit is right not only for the dog, but for you and your family as well. With our Foster to Adopt program, you sign a contract with us to foster the dog for a couple weeks until you are smitten and ready to seal the deal with an adoption contract!

7. Finalize Your Adoption

We sign a contract to seal the deal! Our adoption fees are $350 for Adults and $400 for dogs under 1 year.
